VRC December 2021 Rescue Update

As promised, here is an update on King's abscess. Unfortunately, our little man is really struggling to fight the bacteria in his system from being left to fend for himself on the mean streets of Vancouver. Since the surgery for his abscess removal, it's unfortunately returned 😞 It's too soon to put this poor prince through another surgery, but in the meantime he has a full course-load of antibiotics and the vet has ordered another bacteria culture.

King's plans for the holidays include receiving LOTS of TLC from his phenomenal foster, Sonya. While we wait to see if the surgery site improves, the VRC team is working diligently to place and settle a larger group of rats pulled from an SRO last week.

It isn't often we're asked for help from a pest control company, but these were special circumstances & the amazing @Humane Solutions knew just who to call!

With at least 3 cages worth of domestic, socialized and emaciated rats, time was of the essence to remove them all from a single-room-occupancy. These rats were in a dangerous situation and HS could see they deserved a second chance.

Volunteers took time to round up all expecting young girls and mothers with litters, divided all the rittens by age group + sex, and started calling around. Coquitlam Animal Shelter and Best Friend Rodent Rescue generously offered their space & expertise to help with this huge intake. VRC fosters took in the remaining rats to go through a minimum 2week quarantine, to settle into care & identify any health issues. Many of these babies will be available for adoption in the new year, but in the meantime we'll be putting extra funds from the pin preorder towards this rescue. That means paying for the transportation of fosters and adoptable rats throughout the lower mainland, food and supplies, vetting, maternity care & supporting the other rescues who've generously offered to help.

We can't thank our wonderful community, dedicated volunteers and caring fosters enough. πŸ˜πŸ’” If it wasn't for the CAS & BFRR, we are so scared for what could've happened to these little lost souls. There are many rats still living in neglect that are not so lucky. 😞 Another HUGE thank you goes out to Ralph's Luxury Pet Furniture for generously donating their hand-made, high quality hammocks for these traumatized rats to find comfort and security in.

More updates to come on King's recovery and how these littles adjust to a brand new lease on life. Stay in touch with VRC for more information on these holiday babies, adoptable rats in the future, volunteer & foster opportunities. Thank you to those who have been showing VRC their support, donating and sharing! We wouldn't be able to do this without you. πŸ€πŸ’•

To help cover the costs of surgery, we're doing an enamel pin preorder! There will be a delay of at least 1-2 months before shipping out, the pins won't be arriving before Christmas. Depending on interest we MAY order more, but the listed price is limited time only! (12$)
